"Sneaky as a snake and twice as mean," that's how one long-time wrestling fan described Freddy Gomez. It's true that Gomez never met a rule he wasn't willing to break - or a least bend a lot, but you have to admit that it was successful for him.

He knew the rules and how to take advantage of them. Unlike some big brutes who simply ignored the rules, Freddy was sneaky and devious. In a way, you just couldn't help but admire his skill at skirting the rulebook. All it took was for the referee's attention to be averted for a second and Freddy was all over his opponent like cold on ice.

Known for his liberal use of chairs and other arena furnishings, it's also been alleged that Freddy often carried a length of rope in his trunks to choke the breath out of an opponent. "Alleged nothing. Wrestling Freddy Gomez was the closest thing to an Arizona lynching since the end of the wild west days," said "Cowboy" Bob Yuma when asked about this charge.

One of the more unusual periods of his career was when Freddy decided that he hated all of the Mexican people and changed his name to "Freddy Gomez-Smith" and claimed to be from New York City. Needless to say that this didn't set too well with the heavily Hispanic Phoenix, Arizona wrestling crowd. They didn't need another reason to dislike Gomez, but they were more than willing to add this one to the list.

These days, Freddy is out of the wrestling business and enjoying a more relaxed lifestyle. Love him or hate him, you have to admit that he is one legend who did his part to make Arizona wrestling HOT.
