Bud Brown just showed up when Tito Montez was running wrestling in the Phoenix area, nobody is sure from where and wanted to wrestle. An older, out of shape guy, Montez and cohorts were reluctant to give him the chance, though they made him a ringside announcer and timekeeper.
As The Mortician, he wore a hood and did some manager work which gained heat from the crowd. In the ring, he was clearly past his prime. He had one bout in Phoenix at the old Madison Square Garden which left a lot to be desired, facing Nano Ortega, and once again, he was back at the announcer's table. While he had some verified wrestling knowledge gained from someplace , hi s best years were behind him by the time he drifted into Arizona and it was painfully obvious to everyone but him. He was still a charismatic type of guy and the promotion found whatever use for him they could, in spite of his constant demands to be allowed to wrestle more often.
After the Garden was closed down, another promotion took over and once again, Brown was there wanting to wrestler. He wore a hood, becoming Lucifer, prince Of darkness, but once again, his run was limited. The desire was there, but physically, he just couldn't keep up the pace. True, he threw a good fireball and was good at the use of a foreign object, but that was about it. He finally smelled the coffee and called it quits.
In the late 1980s, he resurfaced briefly when David Rose was running, though his health was failing him. His wife had died in the meantime and he, himself, was said to be battling cancer. While he wanted to manage, finally realizing wrestling was out of the question, he was turned down, but was once again allowed to do ringside commentary.
Then he disappeared, as rapidly as he had materialized. Some time afterward it was revealed the cancer had taken its toll.
Bud brown had very limited ability, but tons of enthusiasm. like many, he gave more to the wrestling business than the business gave back to him.
